’’Je peux vous annoncer ici la préparation d’un projet de code de l’enfant qui sera sous peu soumis en Conseil des ministres’’, a déclaré Malick Sall.

The state of South Carolina will soon raise the age a suspect is considered an adult to 18 years old.

As the law sits now, a 17-year-old is considered an adult. But starting July 1 they will be considered juveniles.

 “We know how to handle juveniles and it’s just basically that they’re one year older now,” said Assistant Solicitor Lauren Vinson with the 15th District.

State Minister for Education, Youth and Information, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, says the Ministry stands ready to support all efforts aimed at advancing the education of youngsters, ages 12 to 18, who are in custody at correctional institutions.

He said that such engagement is necessary in preventing the juvenile offenders from falling back into the cycle of crime and deviant behaviour, by ensuring that “when they leave the correctional facilities, they are able to better function as law-abiding citizens in productive areas”.

After a new report found that more than 90 percent of youth in the county’s juvenile halls had an open mental health case, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors pledged to improve mental health care to justice-involved youth in county.

That includes both more services for youth detained in the county’s juvenile detention facilities and more options to divert youth away from incarceration and into less restrictive therapeutic placements in a community-based setting.
