IJJO Day by Day

On the 28th of September the IJJO attended the Club de Madrid kick-off meeting “Preventing Violent Extremism: Leaders Telling a Different Story”. This event marked the start of a very ambitious EU-funded project, lasting 12 months, which aims to strengthen the counter-narrative debate on extremist propaganda, as well as produce a multi-dimensional response to this issue.

IJJO Day by Day

On Thursday 22nd September, General Comment No. 19 of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child on public budgeting for the realisation of children’s rights was officially launched in Geneva (Switzerland). The event, celebrated parallel to the 73rd session of the Committee, was organised by the Child Rights Connect network, of which the IJJO is a member.

IJJO Day by Day

On August 30th, the IJJO participated in an international seminar on children's rights, public safety and non-custodial measures from a socio-legal perspective, held in Montevideo (Uruguay) and organised by UNICEF in collaboration with the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Violence against Children, Marta Santos Pais.

IJJO Day by Day

The Confederation of European Probation (CEP) organised an international seminar on ‘Working with young adult offenders’ (age group: 16-25 years old) in Lillestrøm, Norway, from the 31st of August to the 1st of September. The IJJO, represented by Sophie Duroy, gave a presentation on “Child-friendly measures applicable to young adults”.

IJJO Day by Day

On the 23rd of August the Child Rights Connect network hosted a webinar on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the context of their implementation phase at national level. The IJJO participated in this seminar as part of this network, reaffirming its commitment to the promotion of the goals related to children’s rights, in particular goal 16.2 (ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture against children).

From the 16th to the 18th of August 2016, the UNICEF East Asia and Pacific Regional Office (EAPRO) held a 'Regional Workshop on Diversion and Other Alternative Measures for Children in Conflict with the Law' in Bangkok (Thailand).

IJJO Day by Day

The European Parliament’s Child Rights Intergroup met for the first time in Brussels on the 22nd of June. This Intergroup constitutes the first formal body in the European Parliament that focuses on children’s rights and assesses the impact of legislative and non-legislative work on children. The IJJO, member of the Intergroup, was represented by Adélaïde Vanhove, Policy Officer on European Affairs.

IJJO Day by Day

The IJJO took part in the workshop “Young offenders in Europe: Active inclusion and rehabilitation”, organised by the European Social Network (ESN) on the 11th and 12th of July in Athens, Greece. The workshop gathered more than 30 social services professionals from different levels of government, as well as academics from across Europe.

IJJO Day by Day

The International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO) and the Child Rights Network in Mexico (known as REDIM by its Spanish acronym) – a member of the North American Council for Juvenile Justice- actively participated in the 4th EU-Mexico Civil Society (CSO) Seminar, which took place on the 20th of June in Brussels. The situation of children was one of the central themes of the seminar.

The IJJO attended an event held by Fair Trials International at the European Parliament last May, for the launch of their new report ‘A Measure of Last Resort? The practice of pre-trial detention decision-making in the EU’, which shows the extent to which pre-trial detention is being used all over the EU without adequate justification.
