IJJO Day by Day
The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) has granted the International Juvenile Justice Observatory (IJJO) the UN special consultative status during the meeting that took place in July 2011 after receiving a favorable recommendation of the NGO Committee of ECOSOC.

In the course of the exam of the IJJO’s application by the Committee, during the session of May 2011, a significant number of countries shown special interest in the activities developed by the IJJO in different parts of world (see attached). Specifically, various representatives of permanent missions to the United Nations focused on the IJJO activities conducted in Latin American Region, as well as those carried out in collaboration with international institutions such as UNESCO, the Council of Europe, etc. The Committee has therefore issued a favorable recommendation to grant the IJJO the special consultative status, which was then approved by the Council of ECOSOC during the plenary session held in July this year.

Thanks to this recognition, the Observatory shall intervene and participate in meetings, events and activities of organizations such as the Council of Human Rights, in order to improve the situation of minors at risk of social exclusion and promote the rights of the minors in conflict with the law in the world. Specifically, it will develop proposals and written recommendations, present statements/declarations to the Council and associated bodies in all areas related to the juvenile justice. This recognition allows the IJJO to be involved into the mechanisms of the UN and to have the opportunity to influence the decision making process related to the defense of the Rights of the Child.

For this reason, the IJJO would like to share this achievement with all its partners and users and other people interested in improving the situation of the children in conflict with the law.

The photographs show the members of the board of directors and of the management who were present at the plenary session of the NGO Committee to defend the candidature of IJJO.
