Final conference of the 'Implementing Restorative Justice with Child Victims' project

On the 7th of December 2018, a final conference was held for the IJJO led project `Implementing Restorative Justice with Child Victims´ on the KU Leuven Campus in Brussels (Belgium). During the conference, partners presented the results of the project as well as its outputs, such as the practical guide on implementing restorative justice with children


The conference began with welcome remarks from Tim Chapman, University of Ulster (UK), Edit Törzs, European Forum for Restorative Justice (Belgium), Anne Reynaud, International Juvenile Justice Observatory (Belgium), and a general introduction on Restorative Justice from Ivo Aertsen, KU Leuven (Belgium).

Throughout the conference, participants attended sessions on ‘Victims’ rights in the EU: considerations for Restorative Justice´ (Joanna Goodey, European Agency for Fundamental Rights, Austria), `The concept of confidential centres for child abuse and neglect in Belgium´ (Peter Adriaenssens, KU Leuven, Belgium), `Restorative Justice and child victim: on the qualities and complexities of Participation´ (Tali Gal, University of Haifa, Israel), `From the European model on Restorative Juvenile Justice to the piloting of restorative practice with child victims: the story of a journey´ (Tim Chapman, University of Ulster, UK, Maija Gellin, University of Lapland, Finland) and `Implementing juvenile justice practices with children: challenges and promising practices in European countries´ (representatives from Latvia, France, and Bulgaria).

Participants ended the day with a session titled `How to overcome the challenges which are preventing the implementation of a successful and sustainable Juvenile Restorative Justice in Europe?´ led by two representatives from KU Leuven, Belgium, Brulinda Pali and Monique Anderson. As well as closing remarks from Edit Törzs, European Forum for Restorative Justice (Belgium) and Anne Reynaud International Juvenile Justice Observatory (Belgium).
