Youth resettlement work: Interim report into work in custody

HM Inspectorate of Probation and HM Inspectorate of Prisons

Abstract

Joint Thematic Inspection by HM Inspectorate of Probation and HM Inspectorate of Prisons

Youth resettlement work: Interim report into work in custody

October 2018 – April 2019

Every year, hundreds of children are released from custody into the community – many of them with very profound needs for support and follow up care. This inspection looked at the experience of 50 of these children who were released between October 2018 and April 2019 from all five YOIs. As well as examining the case files, our inspectors interviewed the case managers and children themselves wherever possible. They also used data collected on 115 children released in the first three months of 2019 and drew on a survey of over 600 children in custody undertaken by HMI Prisons.
